UNDERSTUDY

DENVER THEATRE DISTRICT, NOVEMBER 2019

Understudy is a 700-square-foot arts and culture incubator space dedicated to creative exploration. Understudy provides a free, central, and innovative platform for artists and creative groups to experiment. Located in the Colorado Convention Center (CCC) at 890 C 14th St., Understudy is operated, curated, and funded by the Denver Theatre District.

Empathy and consideration are medicines prescribed to humans to cure the angst, trauma, mental illness or other side effects brought on by life experience.  To successfully administer this medication to the masses we must first encourage humans to be reunited with their humanity.  Thus, the most recent intervention: Every Human.

Every Human searches to find the common denominators between us humans.  As we reflect on these common denominators as a group, we will hopefully ignite feelings of empathy and consideration not just for others, but also for our selves.  In participation with the Biennial of the Americas and Understudy, we will produce a two part data driven project that is both actively motivating growth in our community as well personal healing.  | Opening Reception Nov 8th  6p

DAY

This was the first time I thought about my work as experiential, installation, or even sculpture. Prior to this moment, I had thought about very specific works, but was still grappling with the idea of my work being something that existed in space and time. That listening to audio and trolling around a room could be an approach for my creative practice. The Understudy offered me funding and time to develop what would become a massive body of work.

This was also an especially wonderful time because this was the first time I had been able to work with Experience Designer, Bonnie Gregory. I learned so much about fabrication and expanded on the different ways I can position my work in spaces to influence audience engagement.
