TODAY’S TOPIC: Curatorial Practice - and its effects on sociability...
QUESTION
How does the curatorial practice affect sociability, social engagement, & social practice?
DESCRIPTION
Social Practice has helped define the emergence of participatory contemporary art since the 1990s, placing a new emphasis on the artistic production of social connectivity and interaction. Positioning a new emphasis on relational aesthetics has been a fruitful practice for many artists, allowing their works to achieve a goal of sociality. However, there remain issues with the outcome of such practices, as an imbalance of emphasis can occur between the visual aesthetic and the actuality of social engagement. Many critics and scholars have explored this disparity within artistic practices. However, the role of the curator has not been explored within this dynamic. This conversation aims to start a dialogue around the curation of socially engaged works and how curatorial choices can impact the social context of many of these projects.
DEFINITIONS
Social Practice: a specific medium of art that emerged in the 1990s, social practice defines practices that places emphasis on social interaction and discourse.
Relational Aesthetics: the theoretical approach observed by French art critic Nicolas Bourriaud that describes the emphasis on public, social interaction rather than private, secluded experiences.
Social Engagement: the reference to the degree of participatory activity that emerges from public interaction.
